Spanning four decades, this exhibit offers a retrospective of Gary’s artworks, including oil and acrylic paintings and woodcuts, featuring the human form. The earliest paintings are from Gary’s time at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) when he was inspired by SFAI’s most notable alumni and teachers: Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Joan Brown, Nathan Oliveira, and others, to experiment with abstract expressionism. Over the years, his artworks affirm the guiding influence of other art movements, including pop, minimalism, surrealism, and constructivism. Gary’s recent paintings present the human figure with a mature artistic perspective and evolved creative technique that is distinct, bold and evocative.
